Study Leaving Cert Arabic at Ashfield College

Leaving Certificate Arabic can be studied as a one or two year programme as a full-time day school student.

Leaving Certificate Arabic is based on the Arabic curriculum taught at secondary school level in the state system of an Arabic-speaking country. The curriculum includes a number of prescribed texts, both religious and secular.

Since 1999, Dr Selim has been teaching Arabic to native and non-native speakers and lectures in Arabic studies at Trinity College. Dr Selim also taught the International Arabic Baccalaureate for several years and many his students received student’s award at UCD. He taught Arabic for a number of Irish politicians e.g. John Gormley, Secretary of the Green Party and Irish Diplomats such as Patrick Sammon, First Secretary. Some of his publications have been published by Cambridge Scholar press and currently he is preparing his book “Arabic for Leaving Certificate”.

Subject Content
The course consists of the study of a variety of aspects of Arabic under the following headings:

  • Understanding and conveying information
  • Recognising and responding to linguistic devices
  • Communicating effectively and appropriately
  • Exercising control of grammar structures
  • Evaluating material
  • Recognising implicit meanings
  • International environment

Exam Structure

Arabic is assessed by a written examination at both Ordinary and Higher levels. There is also an aural and an oral examination at both levels. The written exam is divided into Reading comprehension 20%, Literature 35%, Usage 20%  and Continuous writing 25%.
